'Bronzed skin' — is it really healthy skin?

2020.08.28

"
[iNews24, Reporter Jeong Sang-ho] In summer, the season of skin exposure, a bronzed tan is often envied by many. This is because the perception that 'darkly tanned skin looks healthy' remains widespread. However, this is nothing more than a misconception about skin health.

In fact, sunlight — and specifically UV rays — that darken the skin is a factor that promotes 'skin aging,' not 'skin health.' Research has shown that UV exposure not only causes pigmentation but also increases the risk of skin cancer. Last year, France's National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) pointed out the carcinogenicity of tanning, particularly artificial tanning, and argued that tanning for cosmetic purposes should be stopped immediately.

Moderate sunlight is beneficial to our health, for example by helping the body produce vitamin D. However, excessive exposure can pose risks such as accelerated skin aging or the development of skin cancer, so caution is necessary. Therefore, the key focus of summer skin care should be on 'avoiding excessive UV exposure,' rather than achieving a bronzed tan.

It is advisable to avoid going outdoors as much as possible between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when UV rays are at their strongest. If outdoor activity is unavoidable, sunscreen is essential and should ideally be reapplied every one to two hours. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection, as well as hats and parasols, is also recommended.

In addition, after outdoor activities during the midday hours, the skin may become red and flushed or develop blisters. In such cases, it is necessary to soothe the skin with a cold, damp towel. Since blisters also carry the risk of secondary infection, a visit to a hospital for medical treatment is strongly advised if symptoms are severe.
<ad></ad>
However, summer skin care of this kind is ultimately a matter of prevention. Pigmentation disorders or wrinkles that have already developed will not improve simply by reducing UV exposure from this point on. If you are already experiencing stress because your skin looks older than your actual age, it may be worth considering seeking fundamental treatment from a dermatology specialist, rather than focusing solely on prevention.
"

According to industry sources, the July–August summer vacation period is actually a time when inquiries about anti-aging procedures are particularly high. Among these, the most frequently inquired-about treatment is 'Thermage FLX.'

Dr. Ryu Hyo-seop, director of Apgujeong Wells Dermatology Clinic, stated, "Thermage FLX is the most representative lifting procedure for alleviating skin aging factors such as wrinkles and loss of elasticity," adding, "Thermage FLX uses radiofrequency energy optimized for each skin type to help promote collagen regeneration and improve skin elasticity, making it the most popular procedure."

He further advised, "However, when performing Thermage FLX, it is essential to use genuine tips in order to guarantee efficacy and safety, so patients should make a point of checking this when looking into clinics."
